What is PEPPOL?

PEPPOL is short for Pan-European Public Procurement Online and has been around since 2008. It is a kind of digital highway for doing business online. Via the PEPPOL network, for example, e-Orders, e-Packing slips and e-Invoices can be easily exchanged. It is a secure network to which only companies and government institutions with a PEPPOl verification can be connected

The PEPPOL network allows you to send and receive digital invoices throughout Europe in a secure and efficient way. It’s not for nothing that it became a mandatory standard in 2019 for all government agencies in the Netherlands. In addition, it is certainly an attractive way of digital invoice processing for businesses, mainly because it is a lot safer.

Bear in mind, however, that digital invoices you receive with PEPPOL cannot be in PDF format for example, as PEPPOL only works with digital UBL files. So, in order to work with PEPPOL, you must first (be able to) make a UBL invoice. UBL stands for Universal Business Language. It’s no longer necessary to match the billing address. Suppliers can send invoices directly to the Spend Cloud using your organisation’s PEPPOL ID.
Ghost invoices become a thing of the past: because all companies connected to the PEPPOL network must first be validated, you can be sure that invoices actually come from your supplier.
The invoices in the PEPPOL network are standardised (UBL format). The Spend Cloud automatically ensures that the invoice data is transferred one to one.
